Where NRVRJ Releases Go

New River Valley Regional Jail is the principal jail serving Grayson County. It holds people from a regional group that also includes Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Pulaski, Wythe, and the City of Radford. That structure matters when a name is linked to a Grayson arrest but the jail address is in Dublin. The jail, the arresting sheriff, the court, and the legal custodian may be different offices.

An exit from NRVRJ can lead to several places. A person may return to the community after bond, personal recognizance, an unsecured release, a court order, or completion of a local sentence. Someone with a state-responsible sentence may instead transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections. A person held for a federal matter may move under U.S. Marshals Service control. Another county, immigration authority, or other custodian may also receive the person. The booking/release record’s disposition and receiving-agency field, when recorded and releasable, separate these outcomes.

Search NRVRJ Released Inmates

The official NRVRJ inmate lookup is unusually useful because both search forms include a checkbox labeled Include released inmates. The name form accepts first name, last name, and date of birth. The identifier form accepts a Booking Number, Permanent Number, State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number. No official retention period or update schedule is published, so a missing result is not proof that no booking or release occurred.

1. Choose the name or identifier search and enter the most exact data available.
2. Select Include released inmates before submitting the search.
3. Match the record by date of birth or an agency number, not by name alone.
4. Read only fields the live result actually shows. Do not assume it contains a photo, exact exit time, or destination.
5. Call NRVRJ when the result is absent, unclear, or could describe a transfer.

Request an NRVRJ Release Record

A focused request should seek an existing booking/release record, not ask staff to research or write a new account. Give the adult’s full name and date of birth, booking number if known, the Grayson connection, and an approximate date range. Ask for admission date, release date and time, release disposition, and the receiving agency if that fact is recorded and public. If an identification image is needed, request the initial routine booking photograph as a separate record.

NRVRJ’s FOIA page did not publish a complete submission procedure in the reviewed material. Call first to confirm the delivery method and possible cost. Virginia FOIA generally directs a public body to respond within five working days by producing records, citing a lawful withholding, reporting no responsive record and a known holder, or invoking extra time when allowed. Charges may reflect reasonable actual cost, and an estimate may be requested.

For the legal basis of release, pair the jail record with the Grayson General District or Circuit Court order. A bond, dismissal, time-served sentence, or other order can explain authority, yet it does not supply the jail’s physical exit time or rule out another hold.

NRVRJ Bond Release Paths

The official NRVRJ bond page distinguishes personal recognizance, unsecured bond, secured bond, and ineligible-for-bail status. Personal recognizance permits release on a promise to appear. An unsecured bond sets an amount that is owed if the person does not appear, without requiring payment before release. A secured bond requires the set security before release. These are possible paths, not proof of what happened in one case.

After commitment, only a judge can lower bond or arrange recognizance. Jail staff cannot recommend a bondsman. New River Community Corrections and Pretrial Services serves Grayson within the 27th Judicial District and may be relevant when release includes pretrial monitoring. That local service is not VADOC parole or probation, and neither status should be inferred from a bond record.

Why NRVRJ Serves Grayson Releases

The regional jail’s official history says its first prisoners arrived in 1999 after participating local facilities closed. An expansion followed in 2010. This history explains why a person arrested in Grayson County may appear in a regional system in Dublin instead of a county-run long-stay jail in Independence. It also explains why the committing locality must be checked when people with similar names appear.

The image identifies the regional authority’s official web source. Released-person research should move from that source to the released-inclusive lookup, then to direct records confirmation if the web result is incomplete.

The statewide Board of Local and Regional Jails separately lists the Grayson County Lockup. Research did not establish that lockup as Grayson’s ordinary long-stay jail or as the keeper of NRVRJ booking records. A same-day inquiry can start with the Sheriff, but a transported detainee’s jail record belongs with NRVRJ.

NRVRJ Funds After Release

The NRVRJ accounts page states that a released person may have the remaining account balance mailed or may elect in-person pickup. The facility’s property page describes rules during custody but does not establish a complete public release-property process. Questions about a specific balance, pickup, or unclaimed item should therefore go to the jail rather than being inferred from general rules.

A transfer can change which office controls funds and property. If NRVRJ sends someone to VADOC or another custodian, the receiving system’s rules may apply after the move. Keep the release disposition, property issue, and account issue separate so the right unit can answer each one.

Confirm the NRVRJ Release

Strong confirmation uses two sources. First obtain the finalized NRVRJ booking/release entry or a direct statement from the jail about the custody exit. Then match it to the legal authority, such as a court order or bond record. Add VADOC, BOP, USMS, ICE, or supervision records only when the release disposition points to that system.

Virginia Jail VINE can corroborate a custody change, but its combined “released or transferred” notice is not enough to prove return to the community. A current VADOC result may show state prison or community supervision after NRVRJ. A BOP result answers only federal Bureau of Prisons custody. Each record should be labeled by the event and agency it actually describes.

Release

Movement from one facility or legal custodian to another, not freedom from custody.

Disposition

The recorded reason or outcome tied to the jail exit.

Detainer

A request or legal basis for another agency to hold or receive a person.

When dates conflict, preserve the labels. A court order date, bond-posting date, transport time, and administrative release time can all differ without any record being false. The jail’s finalized exit record answers when NRVRJ custody ended.
