VADOC Statewide Release Paths
The Virginia Department of Corrections assigns sentenced people through a statewide classification process. Committing locality is one record field, not a facility assignment rule. Someone convicted in Grayson may serve time at River North or at another VADOC institution. Likewise, River North houses people committed by other courts. Search the actual state record before contacting a prison.
Three events must remain separate. A facility transfer changes the place of confinement while VADOC custody continues. A parole release moves an eligible person into supervised community status. A discharge ends the relevant custody term as recorded by VADOC, though another warrant or detainer can lead to another custodian. The final release document and receiving-agency information resolve the difference.

Search VADOC Release Records
The official Inmate and Supervisee Locator accepts the first three letters of a first name with the full last name, or a seven-digit DOC number. Optional location, race, gender, and age filters can narrow a match. The locator covers people in VADOC custody or current VADOC supervision, including some people held in local or regional jails under state authority.
- Use the DOC number when known, then verify the identity details.
- Read the reported facility or supervision location and note the search date.
- Copy the exact label for any prospective release or parole field.
- Do not call a new prison location a release; it may be a transfer.
- For a fully discharged person who is absent, use VADOC’s inactive-record process.
VADOC states that its data update daily and can be inaccurate or outdated. It is not a permanent public archive of every person once supervision ends. A missing result cannot establish discharge. Search spelling and identifier issues first, then request the historical record.

Statewide VADOC Records Requests
VADOC Operating Procedure 050.1 identifies public record categories that can include offense, sentence length, committing locality, current location, dates of confinement, prior releases from DOC, prior probation or parole history, justice-system status, and projected parole-eligibility, mandatory-parole, or good-time-release dates, subject to legal restrictions.
Ask for existing records sufficient to show the person’s dates of confinement, prior release or discharge date and type, and the signed Order of Release or equivalent finalized paperwork. Include the DOC number, full name, date of birth, committing locality, and a reasonable date range. Direct the request to the unit manager, facility head, probation or parole chief, or central office that holds the file.

VADOC accepts requests through several channels and prefers writing. Inactive-offender records may require the linked Form 17 route, and identity or consent limits may apply. Virginia FOIA allows lawful redaction and reasonable actual-cost charges. A narrow request helps avoid delay and keeps protected medical, victim, and security information outside the scope.
VADOC Release Versus Transfer
VADOC’s facility directory is a location tool. A change from one institution to another is an internal movement, even when the first prison’s record no longer shows the person. The state locator, transfer documentation, and new facility entry should align. Only the finalized discharge or parole record establishes a community exit from VADOC confinement.

Parole Board monthly reports describe a vote, not the gate event. A grant still moves through release planning and can be affected by warrants, detainers, address review, and other processing. Match the decision report with the later VADOC exit document.

VADOC Final Discharge Process
The VADOC facility release process calls for final sentence and document review. Records staff examine VACORIS and hardcopy records, resolve uncalculated sentences, review court orders, warrants, detainers, and discipline, verify the date, and upload the final documents. A projected date remains subject to this check.
On the release day, applicable release, probation, or parole conditions are read or provided and signed before a witness. VADOC says discharge or parole release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on that date, weather permitting. The rule concerns a state facility’s actual community release. It does not set a release schedule for NRVRJ or the Grayson County Lockup.
VADOC can return approved property, address release funds, provide discharge clothing, and arrange bus transportation when needed. Those logistics support a state community exit. They should not be copied onto county-jail or inter-prison transfer descriptions.
Why Grayson Searches Go Statewide
Grayson County contains River North Correctional Center, but local geography is not sentencing custody. The county-serving regional jail is in Dublin, and VADOC prisons are assigned statewide. This unusual map is why a name can disappear from NRVRJ and later appear at a state facility far from Grayson without any community release between those entries.

The directory helps identify the institution or district shown in the matched record. It is not a released-person archive, so the locator and finalized records remain the key release channels.
A sound timeline may begin with a Grayson arrest, move through NRVRJ, continue into VADOC reception and classification, include one or more prison transfers, and end in discharge or supervised release. Name each event by source. This preserves the difference between physical location, legal custody, and community status.
After a Statewide VADOC Release
A person may remain on probation or parole after prison. VADOC’s locator includes current supervisees, so a record can persist even after physical custody ends. For a person supervised in the Grayson area, District 16 in Wytheville serves Grayson and nearby jurisdictions. The district can verify current supervision and reporting office, but it does not replace the prison’s release record.
Jail VINE and VADOC victim notification use separate registrations. A notification created for NRVRJ does not automatically follow someone into state custody. Eligible users must identify the receiving system and register again. A Jail VINE message that combines “released or transferred” is a prompt to call the source agency, not proof of freedom.
